How we give buildings a future.
While Germany aims to reach greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045, ista already decided back in the summer of 2021 to pursue an even more ambitious plan. We are going a significant step further by aiming to reduce our emissions to net zero by 2030.
To achieve this, we are systematically implementing various measures step by step. However, it is not yet possible to completely avoid emissions. That’s why we are also making a financial contribution to climate protection by purchasing CO₂ certificates from the First Climate initiative.
Our goals are ambitious but, thanks to our clear roadmap, we are confident that we can achieve them.
To achieve our goal of net zero by 2030, we have introduced a variety of measures that we are systematically implementing. We are well on the way to electrifying our vehicle fleet, as the example of Germany shows: in the 2024 reporting year, a third of our service vehicles had already switched to e-mobility. Including hybrid cars, around 72% of the ista fleet is now (partially) electrified.
We are also getting ever closer to our goal of using 100% renewable electricity for the energy supply in our properties. In 2024, 80.3% of our locations worldwide were using renewables.
Nevertheless, we are well aware that we still have a long way to go. This is why we continuously analyse and assess the efficacy of our actions, fine-tuning them, if necessary. This ensures we remain on course to reach net zero.
The trend is quite clear: our customers' carbon footprint in Germany is steadily decreasing. In 2023, the average CO₂ savings for properties with heating cost billing was 12.33% compared with the base year 2018. Customers who have a clear picture of their own consumption can reduce it in a targeted manner, thereby also cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

In order for us to consistently pursue our goals, we need firmly established structures and responsibilities. At ista, sustainability is a top priority: our Management Board is directly responsible for the company's sustainability activities and defines the ambitious goals we want to achieve in the years to come.
Our Senior Programme Manager Sustainability is in charge of coordinating all activities. He regularly reviews and fine-tunes implementation of the global sustainability strategy in close consultation with the Management Board.
Sustainability delegates coordinate and develop local activities in each country. They also ensure that ideas from their respective markets are incorporated in the overall strategy.
We use centralised corporate sustainability software across the Group to measure and manage our sustainability performance. This software collects and aggregates relevant data such as energy consumption, emissions, mobility and HR development.
It helps us to continuously monitor our progress towards our goals and to prepare customised reports for internal and external stakeholders. This creates transparency and lays the foundation for informed decision-making.
