How does it work?

ista’s hybrid meters are ideal for comercial properties where individual units are heated and cooled via a water circuit. They ensure fair, consumption-based cost allocation and simplify maintenance, while improving everyday energy management efficiency.

Our hybrid meters combine advanced sensor and microchip technology to measure heat and cooling energy with exceptional precision. The sensonic 3 and Ultego III models feature ultrasonic transducers and external temperature sensors that continuously monitor flow and temperature values. This data is processed in real time and displayed on a clear LCD screen, ensuring transparent and accurate readings at all times.The compact versions have been specially developed for use in residential buildings and are adapted to different flow rates, with nominal flow rates of 0.6/1.5 and 2.5 m³/h.

The meters automatically switch between heating and cooling modes based on temperature differences, providing year-round reliability without the need for manual adjustments. Their robust, tamper-proof design and smart connectivity make them easy to integrate into existing building systems, eliminating the need for additional heating and cooling meters and significantly reducing equipment and installation costs.

How does switching between heat and cooling measurement work?

The hybrid meter continuously records the temperature difference between the supply and return lines at 60-second intervals while taking an energy measurement. Based on this data, the device automatically switches between heating and cooling modes.

Heat measurement begins when the temperature difference is greater than 0 Kelvin and the supply temperature exceeds 20 °C. Conversely, the meter switches to cooling mode as soon as the supply water is cooler than the return water, i.e. when the temperature difference is negative and the supply temperature falls below 20 °C.

An integrated electronic microchip (ASIC) then uses the measured values and specific constants for the circulating fluid (K factor) to calculate the consumed energy. The result is displayed in real time on the easy-to-read LCD screen.

 

Compliance and remote reading in COUNTRY.

In Italy, the installation of remotely readable meters is not only a matter of convenience — it is also a legal requirement.

Following the implementation of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) through Legislative Decrees 102/2014 and 73/2020, all heat and cooling meters installed in multi-unit buildings must support remote reading. Existing devices must be upgraded or replaced by 1 January 2027 to ensure full compliance.

ista’s hybrid meters already meet these obligations. With built-in wireless interfaces and compatibility with M-Bus, AMM and IoT networks, they enable automatic data transmission for accurate consumption-based billing, simplified administration and compliance with Italian and EU energy efficiency regulations.
