The picture was taken diagonally upwards towards the ceiling of the office space. As a result, you can see the dark brown ceiling with white ceiling elements and silver pipes stretching across the entire ceiling in the background. In the lower left part of the background, you can see several office desks and glass partitions. You can also see a man sitting with his back to the viewer. On the right, in the background, you can see more glass partitions, more office desks and chairs and a white wall with two large bright windows. The entire background is blurry, as the photo focuses on the man sitting at a white office desk with a light grey laptop in the foreground, from which the photo was taken. The man is wearing a light blue shirt with a dark blue jumper over it and black square glasses. His hair and beard are greying, and he is smiling as he talks to a customer about their Energy-Management-Minute-Review provided by ista.

Energy management and regulation: What UK businesses need to know

As the UK advances on its 2050 net zero target, organisations are under mounting pressure to report on their carbon footprint and prove they are taking meaningful steps towards decarbonisation and improving energy efficiency. Although not yet mandatory, energy management is strongly encouraged and regulated in the UK through various programmes, particularly for larger organisations.

Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS)
ESOS is a mandatory energy assessment scheme for large UK organisations. It runs in four-year phases and is currently in Phase 4, which is underway until 31 December 2026. It applies to businesses with over 250 employees, a turnover above £36 million, and a balance sheet exceeding £18 million. Companies in scope must carry out an energy audit every four years to identify potential energy-saving measures.

Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR)
Mandatory in the UK since April 2019, SECR requires large companies to report annually on their energy use, carbon emissions, and any efficiency improvements. It applies to companies listed on a public exchange or to companies meeting at least two of the following criteria: 250 or more employees, £36 million or more in annual turnover, or a balance sheet total over £18 million. Private companies using less than 40,000 kWh of energy per year are exempt.

ISO 50001
ISO 50001 is an international standard for energy management systems. Although it is not mandatory, it provides a structured way of monitoring and improving energy performance, and it can be used as a recognised method of achieving ESOS compliance. The standard is often adopted by companies seeking to formalise their sustainability efforts and align with best practices.

Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD)
TCFD reporting is mandatory for large UK-listed companies, asset managers, and institutional investors. It requires organisations to disclose how they assess and manage climate-related risks and opportunities, covering areas such as governance, strategy, and emissions impact.

Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES)
As of April 2023, all non-domestic rented properties in the UK must meet an EPC rating of E or higher. These standards are part of a broader effort to reduce the energy demand of commercial buildings, and more stringent requirements are expected in the coming years.

Sustainability Disclosure Requirements (SDR)
The Sustainability Disclosure Requirements (SDRs) mark the UK's ambitious shift towards sustainable finance and corporate responsibility, introducing broader ESG-focused reporting. This comprehensive regulatory framework requires companies and financial institutions to disclose their positive and negative environmental and social impacts. The primary objective of the SDR is to encourage transparency and accountability within the corporate sector. By demanding detailed disclosures, the SDR guarantees that companies are aware of and accountable for their sustainability impacts and commitments.

In this landscape, energy management is not only a technical necessity, but also a regulatory and financial priority. With the right strategies and technologies, it is possible to save both energy and money. Studies have shown that businesses can save between 15% to 20% on their energy bills by making small changes to their working practices, often with little or no financial outlay. Those that take early action and implement data-driven energy management can future-proof their operations, ensure compliance, and improve their long-term sustainability performance.

The picture shows a modern, open-plan office space where two people are standing in the center of the room. In the background on the left are cupboards containing files and a presentation board. To the right, you can see two white walls raised close together that do not reach the ceiling of the room. A railing is attached to the right-hand wall, which extends to the right-hand side of the picture and to the wall there. The wall of the railing itself is made of a grey grid and the floor is attached to a steel beam that can be seen from the side. The lattice provides a clear view of the black wall behind it. Two large desks can be seen in the center of this elevation, with two chairs on either side. On the right-hand side, against the brick wall, there is another desk with a chair and a passageway in the wall. In the foreground you can see two people walking towards the cupboards on the left. These two people are only vaguely recognizable as they are in motion and therefore blurry. In front of the railing in the center of the picture are two large tables that have been placed opposite each other and form a large group of tables. There are two chairs to the left and right of the group of tables. Three plants can be seen on the right-hand edge of the picture, their branches protruding into the picture. In the center of the picture, a younger man is standing next to a younger woman, right before the group of tables. The man has short black hair and a black beard and is wearing a black jacket with grey trousers and brown shoes. The woman has open red wavy hair and is wearing a white blouse, a grey metallic skirt and white pumps. They are both smiling while the woman has a tablet in her hand and is presenting the smart metering options from ista to the man.

The picture shows a man who is apparently sitting in a café or restaurant with his laptop at a single seat with a glass table. He is sitting at the edge, right next to a window front that can be seen in the background. He is wearing a grey flowing jacket and a simple black jumper underneath. He has short brown hair and wears square black glasses. He is holding his mobile phone to his ear with his right hand and appears to be making a call as he smiles broadly. His left hand is placed on the touchpad of his laptop.

Energy Procurement

The picture shows a young woman looking through a window. She has long blonde hair and is wearing a dark blue, polka-dotted top. The woman is smiling and holding a tablet in both hands which is showing the Energy Audit Reporting from ista, her gaze directed slightly to the right. Green plants and a blurred light source can be seen in the background, giving the picture a warm and inviting atmosphere. The light source is located approximately in the centre of the background. The left background area shows a vertical black line, which is probably part of the window frame. The woman is standing relatively close to the window so that her reflection is partially visible in the glass. The foreground of the image is in focus while the background remains blurred, which draws the viewer's attention to the woman's smiling face and her tablet.
