How the radiator meter works.

What is a radiator meter?

The radiator meter is a small and intelligent device that is placed on every radiator in your home. This accurately measures how much heat you consume per radiator. This enables a fair distribution of the total heating costs and provides clear insight into your own consumption. The meter measures consumption in units.

Operation of temperature probes

Each radiator gauge has two temperature sensors. The first sensor measures the temperature of the room in which the radiator is located. The second sensor measures the temperature of the radiator itself. The meter only starts counting when the radiator gives off heat. This happens when the temperature of the radiator is at least 23°C and at least 4.5°C higher than the temperature of the room. If the difference is smaller, or the room is even warmer than the radiator, the meter does not count. This prevents incorrect consumption from being registered.

Meter Reading Conversion

Because not all radiators are the same size and therefore do not emit the same amount of heat, the meter readings are always converted with a conversion factor. This factor depends on the power of the radiator and ensures that the calculation is fair. On your statement you will find your meter readings and the conversion factors associated with your radiators.

Impact on your consumption

Measuring your heat consumption depends not only on the temperature of the radiator and the room, but also on how long the radiator is on and how well it functions. The thermostat knob also plays a role. It is also important that the boiler and radiators are set up correctly. This way, the heat ends up everywhere in the building.

The meters meet the standard

All radiator meters comply with the European standard NEN-EN 834 and are therefore tested for quality and reliability. If your meter does not work or something changes to your radiators, it is important to report this to ista immediately. This way your consumption remains well measured.
